Want to bring your dog along for a ride? Let’s look at some of the top carriers on the market and see what’s good and bad.
We’re looking at carriers for small and calm dogs. Sorry, bigger dogs over 20 pounds or so can’t ride in a carrier. The physics and balance aren’t right, and they’re dangerous. Look at bike trailers for bigger or more active pets.
Most of these mount like a basket in front of the handlebars so you and your dog can see each other. A few mount behind the seat, which is more stable, but limits visibility and communication. Front baskets are for smaller dogs like Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Dachsies, or Toy Poodles. Most are limited to 14 or 15-pound max. Rear carriers, the type that sits on a luggage rack behind the seat, can handle a bit more weight with dogs up to 20 pounds.
Look for security and stability in your pet carrier. You need one that attaches firmly, and your pet isn’t going to like the ride if he or she is swinging back and forth. A multi-point leash attachment is a good idea too. Attaching to a single point won’t keep your pet in the basket. And you will appreciate a washable fabric after the first time your carrier gets caught in the rain.
