    Take Them Along

Airline Approved Dog Carriers

Many airlines now allow you to take a small pet with you in the cabin.  Each carrier has their own regulations as to size and weight along with a bunch of others.  Of course, they charge you dearly for this.  Fortunately, the airline industry has agreed on a set of standards for small pet carriers that travel in the cabins.  They include:

  • Size and material, soft-sided is preferred as your carrier needs to fit under the seat and airline seats vary.
  • Waterproof bottom, for obvious reasons.  A good pad is also recommended.
  • Secure latches, zippers are the standard, snaps are unreliable.
  • Pet must be fully enclosed, and there needs to be ventilation.

Let’s look at some of the most popular Airline Approved Carriers:

Pet Peppy Expandable Pet Carrier

Features:

  • Airline approved, fits under the seat of most airlines
  • 14-pound capacity
  • Expandable, sides open out for extra space
  • Wireframe is flexible but stops carrier from sagging
  • Sidepocket for storing treats, accessories, and required papers

Pros:

  • Well built
  • Easy to carry
  • Good Amazon ratings

Cons:

  • 14-pound limit
  • Some reviewers report flimsy construction, but that is inherent in soft-sided carriers

Opinions:

Overall, the Pet Peppy Expandable Pet Carrier is a good value.  It performs the basics well with good design and construction.  I like the expandable sides.  They can’t be opened for use everywhere, but they give pets some added space when waiting in line or at the terminal.  Pricing is mid-range in its class.  A good value.

Opinions:

Sherpa is one of the leaders in this category, and they seem to know what they’re doing.  Carriers are available in multiple sizes and colors.  This review is for the Delta Deluxe.  They have several other models with varying features.  Choose the one that is best for you.  Pricing is fair, some other Sherpa models have a lot of features and cost more.

Features:

  • Airline approved
  • 20-pound capacity
  • Folds flat for storage
  • Short leash attached for security

Pros:

  • Low cost
  • Simple and lightweight
  • Easy to use
  • Interior leash attachment makes TSA checks easier

Cons:

  • Lightweight construction
  • Soft-sided construction

Opinions:

This Pet Magasin Soft-Sided Carrier is my personal choice.  We bought two for flying with our cats, big 16 pounders, and use them for vet trips.  Travel has gone well.  They carry and balance easily with the hand or shoulder straps.  Getting the cats in and out at the TSA check has gone ok because of the internal leash.  Our cats are big, 16 pounds each.  Not fat but very long, and they fit ok.  Dogs should be the same.  Amazon review ratings are the same as the others rated here, 4.5 out of 5 stars as of this writing.  This carrier sells for $10 to $15 less than the others.  It is a great value.
